Catalytic ammoniac oxidation:

The Application
For the oxidation of air streams containing ammoniac from various processes, Villiger uses a catalytic unit that oxidises ammoniac in a gas-phase to environmentally neutral nitrogen. Through the highly selective nature of the catalyst, the amount of Nox produced is very low so that emission standards for nitrogen-oxides can be easily met.

The combination of this selective catalyst with our existing recuperative or regenerative catalytic processes places with a proven, dependable system at your disposal. With our process, highly contaminated gas streams with ammoniac in them from various industries can be safely and effectively treated.

Our catalytic oxidation systems for ammoniac can be utilised in the following industries amongst others:
  • Drying processes
  • Chemical production processes
  • Coating units
  • Food industry
  • Desorption units
The main advantages are:
  • Safe compliance with emission guidelines for ammoniac
  • Low rates of NOx formation
  • Low operating costs
  • Robust and dependable construction
  • Long life-time
Process principle Flow sheet
The air to be treated is sucked into the unit using a blower and guided over a heat-exchanger which is warmed by treated gas leaving the unit. After this the untreated-air is brought to reaction temperature by either an electrical or gas heater and then oxidised to elemental nitrogen and water in the reactor.

The oxidation happens in a specially designed reactor at temperatures between 280°C and 450°C. After the heat from the cleaned gas exiting the reactor is used to pre-heat the gas entering the unit, it is vented to atmosphere via a stack.

The units are designed taking the newest ATEX regulations into account.
